Pre-checks You Should Be Doing Before Booking an MOT

Booking your MOT can be stressful, especially if you’re worried about unexpected failures or costly repairs. However, there are a few simple pre-checks you should be doing before booking an MOT that can improve your chances of passing the first time — and save you money in the process.
MOT Pre-checks
Start with your lights and indicators
Faulty bulbs are one of the most common MOT failure points. Before your test, turn on all your lights and indicators, including brake lights, fog lights, and number plate lights. Ask a friend to help or check reflections against a wall or garage door to make sure everything works properly.
Check your tyres for wear and pressure
Tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Use a tread gauge or a 20p coin to check — if the outer band of the coin is visible, your tread may be too low. Also, make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure levels (you’ll find these in your car manual or on a sticker inside the driver’s door).
Top up fluids and clear your windscreen
Make sure your windscreen washer fluid is topped up — running out can actually result in a failure. Clean your windscreen and check for any chips or cracks. Remove any items blocking the driver’s view (like air fresheners or sat navs) and test that your wipers are in good condition.
Test your brakes and horn
Your car’s brakes must be in good working order and feel responsive. Get any grinding or squeaking noises checked before your MOT test. Make sure your horn works clearly with a single press.
By completing these pre-checks you should be doing before booking an MOT, you can catch simple faults early and avoid an automatic fail.
