Used car inspection checklist - Rooster

Introduction

Buying a second-hand vehicle can be a smart way to save money — but only if you know what you’re looking at. A proper used car inspection helps uncover hidden issues, strengthens your negotiating position, and reduces the risk of expensive repairs after purchase.

This checklist walks you through every stage of viewing a vehicle, from under-bonnet checks to paperwork and test driving. Whether you’re buying privately or from a dealer, these steps help ensure you’re making a confident, informed decision.

Under the bonnet

Engine fluids

Start with the basics:

  • Pull the dipstick and check the oil level and colour. Clean amber oil is ideal; thick black oil may signal poor maintenance.
  • Look inside the oil filler cap — creamy residue can indicate head gasket problems.
  • Ensure coolant sits between minimum and maximum markers.
  • Check brake and steering fluids aren’t low or discoloured.

Leaks, hoses and battery

Scan for wet patches or stains around the engine and beneath the car. Feel rubber hoses for brittleness or cracking, and look for corrosion on battery terminals, which may suggest an ageing battery.

Exterior walk-around

Bodywork and paint

Uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint or bubbling rust can point to accident repairs or corrosion. Pay close attention to wheel arches, door bottoms and sills.

Tyres, wheels and glass

Tyres should have legal tread depth and wear evenly across the surface. Uneven wear can indicate suspension or alignment issues. Check wheels for cracks or heavy scuffing, and inspect the windscreen for chips that could worsen over time.

Inside the car

5

Dashboard and electrics

Turn the ignition on and ensure all warning lights appear briefly, then go out. Test windows, mirrors, air conditioning, infotainment and heating.

Seats and trim

Excessive wear on seats, pedals or the steering wheel may not match the mileage shown. Also check carpets and boot lining for damp smells or moisture, which can indicate leaks.

The test drive

Engine and gearbox

Acceleration should feel smooth, without hesitation or knocking noises. Gear changes should be clean and responsive, whether manual or automatic.

Brakes, steering and suspension

The car should track straight and brake firmly. Listen for clunks over bumps and watch for excessive bouncing, which may indicate worn suspension components.

Paperwork and history

Before committing, confirm:

  • The V5C logbook matches the vehicle details
  • MOT history aligns with the mileage
  • Service records show consistent maintenance
  • There’s no outstanding finance or insurance write-off history

Discrepancies here are often more concerning than cosmetic faults.

Final checks before buying

Use any issues you uncover to negotiate fairly. Always pay using a traceable method and request a written receipt. Remember: in the UK, insurance and vehicle tax must be arranged before driving away.

Completing a full inspection using this guide gives you the best chance of avoiding unpleasant surprises and ensures your next car is genuinely worth the asking price. Following a structured used car inspection checklist can save you thousands over the life of your vehicle.
