What Does Breakdown Cover Include?

Breakdown cover pays for help when your car stops working: a patrol helps you at the roadside, a recovery vehicle tows your car if the patrol can’t fix it there, and higher levels help you finish your journey. What it never pays for is the repair itself. This guide covers the four standard levels, the gaps people miss, and what Rooster’s £2.99 cover includes.
The four levels of breakdown cover
Roadside assistance is the base level on almost every policy. Break down more than a short distance from home and a patrol comes to you. Around eight in ten breakdowns get fixed at the roadside; if yours can’t be, this level usually includes a tow to a nearby garage, typically within 10 miles.
Home start adds cover at or near your home, usually within a quarter of a mile. It matters more than people expect, because the most common breakdown of all is a car that won’t start on the driveway on a cold morning. Without home start, basic policies leave you stranded at the one place you break down most [→ /breakdown/guides/car-wont-start-common-causes].
National recovery takes you, your passengers and the car to any single destination in the UK, not just the nearest garage. Break down in Leeds on the way to Cornwall and recovery gets you to Cornwall, or home again.
Onward travel is the top tier: it provides a hire car, alternative transport or overnight accommodation so you can continue your journey while a garage repairs your car.
What is breakdown recovery?
Recovery is the towing part of the service: moving a car that can’t be fixed at the roadside. Basic policies recover you a short distance to a local garage. National recovery, as above, takes you anywhere in the UK. If you see “recovery” sold on its own, check the distance limit — that single number is the difference between a service and a taxi to the nearest town.
Roadside assistance vs recovery: the difference
Roadside assistance is the fix attempt; recovery is the tow when fixing fails. Most policies bundle a short tow into roadside assistance, so the practical question when comparing cover is how far that tow goes. “To the nearest garage” and “to anywhere in the UK” are different products at different prices.
What breakdown cover never includes
No policy pays for parts or repairs. Your cover pays for the patrol’s labour at the roadside, but you pay for the new alternator. Other standard exclusions: faults the car had before you took the policy out, repeat call-outs for a fault you’ve been told to repair, cars used for hire or reward, and accident damage, which is your insurer’s job, not your breakdown provider’s [→ /breakdown/guides/does-car-insurance-cover-breakdowns]. Some policies cover misfuelling and tyre call-outs. Others charge extra for them, so check your cover before you need it.
Vehicle cover vs personal cover
Vehicle cover protects one car, whoever is driving it. Personal cover protects you, whatever car you’re in — including as a passenger. Families with one car usually want vehicle cover. Someone who drives several cars, or relies on lifts, gets more from personal cover. Check which type a policy is before comparing prices, because the two aren’t interchangeable.

Breakdown cover FAQs
Does breakdown cover include the cost of repairs? No. The call-out, roadside labour and towing are covered; parts and garage repairs are yours to pay on every policy.
Does breakdown cover work at home? Only if the policy includes home start. Basic roadside-only policies usually exclude breakdowns at or within a quarter of a mile of your home.
Is a flat battery covered? Yes — flat batteries are the most common call-out. If the same battery keeps failing, providers can refuse repeat call-outs until it’s replaced.
Does breakdown cover include Europe? UK policies usually stop at the border. European cover is a separate add-on or policy [→ /breakdown/guides/european-breakdown-cover].
