The rules for booking a car driving test in England, Scotland and Wales changed in stages during 2026. Some advice you may find online is now out of date, so check the official GOV.UK guidance before you act.

- Make sure you are ready. An earlier date only helps if you can pass on it. See the checklist below.
- Log in to the official booking service on GOV.UK. This is the only place to book, change or cancel your test, and it is free to check.
- Look at all centres you can realistically reach. You can book a new test at any centre, but moving an existing test is limited to nearby ones. Consider practising near a centre that has shorter waits.
- Be flexible on days and times. Weekday slots are cheaper than evenings, weekends and bank holidays, and different times can have different availability.
- Check regularly and at different times of day. Cancellations return to the system as other learners change or cancel their tests, so slots can appear at any time.
- Only cancel your current test once you have secured a better one. Use ‘change’ to move it, so you do not lose your place.
- Use your changes wisely. You only have two, so try to save at least one for a genuinely earlier date.
When do cancellations appear?
Cancellations appear whenever learners cancel or move their tests, and slots that come up at short notice tend to be taken within minutes. There is no queue, so the first person to complete the booking gets the slot. Some learners find that early mornings, lunchtimes and evenings are busy times for changes, but there is no guaranteed pattern, so checking little and often is more useful than refreshing constantly.
The 10 working day notice rule was designed to make cancelled slots reappear sooner, so that another learner has time to claim them. That helps you too, because a cancelled slot that is more than two weeks away can still be an improvement on your current date.

- Paying for cancellation-finder apps and bots. Unofficial services can no longer scan the booking system for appointments, and there are scams. Everything you need is free on GOV.UK.
